Creating a Business-Friendly Environment

“Small medical practices, like small businesses, are not immune from the barriers placed on them by ineffective and inefficient government burdens. As a registered nurse, I understand that a modern, efficient and well-equipped office is critical to the practice of medicine.” (Renee Ellmers, Fayetteville Obersver, 06/16/11)

Reducing the government burden on small businesses and medical professionals has been a goal of mine since coming to DC. Last week the Fayetteville Observer published an Op-Ed I wrote. You can read the entire article on my Facebook Page.

Video: Questioning Secretary Geithner

I had the opportunity to question Secretary Geithner when he testified before the Small Business Committee last week. During our exchange, the secretary told me the administration has no choice but to continue adding to the excessive burdens on the backs of our small businesses – or else shrink the government.  On behalf of the small businesses from my district and across the country, my answer to him was, “You are WRONG.”

Watch the whole video from that exchange here on Townhall.com.

Roll Call Highlights Freshmen Republican Women in DC

Last week, Roll Call profiled me along with three other freshman Republican women in an article about conservative women affecting change on Capitol Hill. Here’s a quick excerpt:

“Republicans have a new weapon in their messaging arsenal — a growing, influential caucus of younger GOP women intent on fighting back against Democratic claims that the party is anti-woman.” (Roll Call, 06/20/11)

I was happy to be chosen for their article and hope you’ll take a moment to read it and share with your friends and family in the second district.

Creating a Pro-Jobs Environment for North Carolina

On the campaign trail in 2010, voters from Sanford to Fayetteville told me that their biggest concern was how North Carolina was going to grow jobs in this tough economic climate.

And that concern has been the driving force in these 5 months I’ve been in office.

From fighting Obamacare to standing up for our small businesses, I have fought job-killing legislation and promoted initiatives that would create a job-friendly environment for employers in North Carolina.

I understand that it’s small businesses – not the government – that are the backbone of our economy and our best innovators. That’s why, as Chair of the Small Business Committee, I introduced the Creating Jobs Through Small Business Innovation Act (H.R.1425). This bill reauthorizes a program that the federal government uses to award grants to the small businesses around the country that are developing technology to keep our military safe and secure our nation.

You can find out more about H.R.1425 in this Roll Call article.

And, because all small businesses don’t fit into the technology sector, I have worked with my colleagues in the House to remove burdensome paperwork requirements the federal government places on our job creators. I voted to repeal the cumbersome 1099 Act, a reporting requirement in Obamacare that would have been a paperwork nightmare for small businesses. I also recently participated in a Small Business Panel where I was able to ask business leaders about the burdens government is creating for them. I hope you’ll take a few minutes to watch that video!

I have also used my expertise as a nurse and small business owner in the health care industry to fight the job-killing Obamacare. We are already seeing the disastrous effects of the President’s government takeover of healthcare on jobs in the health care sector today. Doctors are afraid to expand or start medical practices in the face of rising costs and uncertainty over Obamacare and Medicare. Watch this video of my recent floor speech about Obamacare’s impact on jobs.

My colleagues in the House and I have also worked to tackle our nation’s out of control debt by passing the Paul Ryan budget – a plan that right-sizes government spending and eliminates uncertainty about the programs Americans rely on. We are also tackling rising gas prices and shedding light on unnecessary government spending through the YouCut Program.

But we are not done. Unemployment in North Carolina is still above the national average and representatives in Washington have not reached a budget agreement. I will continue my tireless efforts to create a job-friendly, pro-business economy where your friends and neighbors want to create and grow businesses.
